McLean is an unincorporated community located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a census designated place (CDP), the community had a total population of 38,929 as of the 2000 census.
The heavily wooded town of McLean is located between the George Washington Parkway and the town of Vienna, and is known for its many upscale homes and for having a friendly, small-town atmosphere despite its proximity to the capital. The area is also well-known for its shopping and upscale malls, including the nearby Tysons Corner Center and the Galleria.
The George Washington Memorial Parkway, the Capital Beltway, Interstate 66, and the Dulles Toll Road all run through McLean. McLean is also home to many diplomats and government employees, due to the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency being located there. It is also the home of former presidential advisor and presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, as well as the location of Hickory Hill, former and current residence of the Kennedy family.
McLean was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged. The town is named after Edward Beale McLean, publisher of The Washington Post from 1916 to 1933.

McLean is located at 38°55'42" North, 77°10'31" West.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 47.9 km2
(18.5 mi2). 47.9 km2 (18.5 mi2) of it is land, and none of the area is covered with water.
McLean lies to the west of Arlington County, and is bordered by the Potomac River to the north.

As of the census of 2000, there are 38,929 people, 14,374 households and 11,053 families residing
in the CDP. The population density is 812.9/km2 (2,104.9/mi2). There are 14,735 housing units at
an average density of 307.7/km2 (796.7/mi2).
The median income for a household in the CDP is $121,138, and the median income for a family is $137,610.
The per capita income for the CDP is $63,209. 1.9% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line.
